Dera Community ICT Center 

Dera town is located in Eastern zone, Dera woreda of Oromiya regional state 125 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa and 25 kilometers from Adama city having a population of around 15,000. The livelihood of the residents of the kebele is based on agriculture, animal fattening and small scale and medium scale trading. There are 3 primary and 1 high school and preparatory schools, 4 health post/clinic, potable water source. Access to telephone, internet, computer, secretarial, photocopy and other recreational services were very limited
and in some cases one had to go to Adama city before the establishment of this community ICT center with the support of The Ethiopian Information and Communication Technology Development Authority, ICT Assisted Development PMU.

ICTAD has also covered administrative, costs of the center for a period of One  year after which the center has to carry on the activities on a sustainable manner on its own. With the kebele administration providing a place for the center ICTAD has supported for the renovation.

Objectives

The Dera community ICT center was established with the overall objectives of provision of ICT access to the disadvantaged to enhance their involvement and contribution towards the socio economic development of the country.
Where as the specific objectives are the following;

  • producing and dissemination of up to date information on job opportunities, education, health, psychological counseling and environment
  • To provide computer training, internet, fax, telephone, photocopy, telephone, secretarial, printing, binding and recreational services to the community with affordable payment.
  • Protecting of the youth from undue activities and helping them make uses of their time productively.

Services provided by the center


: The services provided by the center are
· computer training, internet, fax, telephone, photocopy, secretarial, printing, binding and recreational services (TV show and cafeteria) rovision of  information on education,

Major achievements

Since its establishment, the center has provided training for 94 in two rounds and the third round having 54 trainees is undergoing. Most of the trainees are government employees in that the center is also contributing in the improvement of public service delivery and the ongoing BPR process in government offices thus contributing to the government’s effort of bringing about good governance. Internet and fax services were totally  unavailable in the town one had to go to Adama city to get such services.  In general the center has made ICT access available to the residents of the locality and the surrounding kebeles and the youth with affordable payment. Daily 50 to 75 individuals make uses of the different services provided by the center.

Peculiarity of the center

Except for the photocopy service being provided by some individuals with a twice as much higher price that of this center, the center is the only of its kind in the town as well as for the environ.
